A fixed-price launch vs. hiring a marketing agency

A fair comparison of a one-time, fixed-price launch and a marketing agency retainer: typical fees, what each covers, and when an agency is the better choice.

Updated October 10, 2026 · 6 min read · For business owners weighing a launch package against an agency

Two different jobs

A launch answers “Are we ready to be found and chosen?” It sets up your offer, price, website, Google profile and first outreach, then hands everything to you.

An agency answers “How do we grow from here?” It runs campaigns, ads, content or search work over months, and reports on what's working. The two are not really rivals. They fit different stages of a business.

When an agency is the better choice

  • Your offer, price and website already work, and you want more of the right customers.
  • You want paid ads set up, managed and tested over time.
  • You need regular content, social posts or search work you don't have time to do.
  • You have the budget for several months of fees, plus any ad spend, while results build.
  • You want monthly reports and someone adjusting the plan as you go.

When a fixed-price launch is the better choice

  • You're starting from an idea, or relaunching with a new focus.
  • You don't yet have a clear offer, a website or a Google profile.
  • You want a known, one-time cost rather than an ongoing commitment.
  • You plan to do your own marketing after launch, at least for a while.

Questions to ask an agency

  • What exactly is included each month, and what costs extra?
  • Is there a minimum term, and how much notice do I need to give?
  • Is ad spend included in the fee, or paid separately?
  • Who owns the website, ad accounts and content if we stop working together?
  • How will you report results, and how often?
  • What can't you promise? Be wary of anyone who promises rankings or sales.

Questions

Is an agency worth it for a brand-new business?

Sometimes. If you have budget for several months of fees and a clear offer already, an agency can help you grow. If you're still shaping the offer and price, it's usually better to settle those first, so the agency has something clear to promote.

Can I hire an agency after my launch?

Yes. A launch gives an agency a clear offer, a website and a plan to work from. Many owners launch first and hire help once they know which channels bring customers.

Do you run paid ads?

No. Paid ads aren't part of our packages. If ads are central to your plan, an agency or ads specialist is the better fit for that part.

Can either option promise results?

No. Agencies and launch services can do good work, but no one can promise rankings, coverage or sales. Ask any supplier what they can and can't commit to.
